Tengah Island Conservation

Situated on Besar Island, Rumah Eko is an eco-learning hub with activities for visitors seeking a deeper connection with nature.
Recognising that waste management is a particular challenge for islands, Rumah Eko also provides solutions for the integrated management of waste for the Besar Island community. Rumah Eko promotes waste reduction and recycling in the tourism economy, plastic upcycling, food waste composting, and food resilience.
In addition, Rumah Eko also works with the local island community to promote sustainable tourism that honours their cultural heritage. Arrange to join a cooking class, and learn more about island culture.
Visit us at Rumah Eko
We welcome visitors to Rumah Eko! Drop by to see us on your holiday in Pulau Besar for a tour of our projects.
Laman Eko is where we grow seedlings of local trees as shore protection and help combat beach erosion. We also grow an edible garden which is open to the island community.
In our solar-powered Upcycle Hut, we have a Precious Plastic machine to melt waste plastic recovered from the island, which can be made into small souvenir items using moulds. A glass crushing machine turns waste glass into dust that can be mixed into concrete. We also have another machine to clean and convert recovered ghost nets into plastic pellets for 3D printing.
Make sure to stop by the Rumah Eko store and browse our selection of upcycled and handmade items. You can even make your own - just sign up to a Precious Plastic or glass crushing activity!
