Anak Pulau
Anak Pulau is a transformative initiative by Fuze Ecoteer, a social enterprise working in the Perhentian Islands, Malaysia. It was a Blue Water Heroes Awards finalist in 2024.
Anak Pulau (children of the island) is a community conservation group made up of children, teenagers, and young adults from the Perhentian islands. We are a community-driven conservation effort, by the islanders, and for the islands.
The programme was initially funded in 2021 by The Habitat Foundation and has since received funds from Yayasan Sime Darby, Sustainable Tourism Network Malaysia, and Reef Check Malaysia.
PEEP
The Anak Pulau program starts with Perhentian Eco Education Project (PEEP). Children aged 7–12 participate in weekly classes that blend academic support with hands-on conservation experiences like coral reef monitoring (Coral Watch), beach cleanups, and recycling initiatives.
PMRS
Teenagers join Perhentian Marine Research Station (PMRS), earning Junior Open Water Diver certification, carry out fish and coral monitoring dives, and conduct turtle nesting patrols with Perhentian Turtle Project. The experience prepares us to join the Rapid Response Team (RRT)
RRT
The Rapid Response Team—a frontline community conservation group — takes on critical marine protection work including ghost net removals, mooring line repairs, and coral planting.
