About PULIHARA

PULIHARA is a Malaysian registered non-profit organisation carrying out turtle conservation projects in Terengganu, Malaysia. Our work at Pulau Lang Tengah involves turtle nest monitoring and conservation, rehabilitation of degraded coral reefs and outreach programmes.

Our project site on Pulau Lang Tengah is located at Pasir Tok Enjut. It is situated at the island’s southernmost tip. It is also known as Turtle Bay due to the number of sea turtle nests laid and incubated on the beach.

turtle nests on Lang Tengah every year

To ensure their safety, these eggs are relocated and incubated in ex-situ nests in front of our research station. Nesting mothers are tagged, given a photo ID, and the nests monitored.

Volunteers are an essential part of our operation—in fact, we can’t do without them.

By engaging in activities such as night time beach patrols, egg collection, and nest monitoring, volunteers help us save the turtles and collate our scientific data throughout the season.

This is the main reason for joining our project. However, watching a turtle lay her eggs or hatchlings scamper down to the water’s edge—sights rarely seen by most—are priceless experiences and a real privilege to witness.

Beyond turtle conservation

PULIHARA also rehabilitates the fringing coral reefs around Pulau Lang Tengah. These form part of the sea turtle habitat and fish breeding grounds. We also work closely with the local community, giving them educational exposure to understand and appreciate the wealth and importance of our marine ecosystem.
