Redang Marine Conservation Group

The Redang Marine Conservation Group (RMCG) is a youth-led community group dedicated to protecting and conserving Redang Island’s marine environment.

In 2022, Reef Check Malaysia conducted a consultation with the Redang community to propose forming a local marine conservation group. The idea received strong support from local youth, and in 2023, we founded Redang Marine Conservation Group.

Since then, RMCG has been actively building capacity among the island’s young people to lead and participate in marine conservation. We focus on local empowerment, environmental education, and sustainable ocean stewardship through hands-on conservation activities involving the island’s youth and partners.

RMCG carries out various conservation activities around Redang Island throughout the year, including:

  • Coral reef monitoring and data collection
  • Underwater and beach clean-ups
  • Crown-of-thorns starfish removal
  • Marine biodiversity surveys
  • Educational programmes for local youth and schools

Our efforts aim to protect the reef ecosystem while building a strong, informed community that cares for the marine environment.

Support sustainable tourism businesses in Redang

We welcome and appreciate visitors who want to make a positive difference while enjoying the beauty of Redang. Here’s how you can help support our community and conservation work:

Be a responsible traveler: Follow marine park rules, avoid touching corals or marine life, and never leave trash behind—especially on the beach or in the sea.

  • Support eco-friendly businesses: Use our Sustainable Redang map below to choose dive centres that are certified Green Fins members, stay at sustainable hotels (e.g. ASEAN Green Hotel-certified), and buy from local vendors who care about sustainability.
  • Respect local customs and nature: The island is our home, and we hope you’ll treat it with the same love and care we do.
  • Help us spread awareness: Share your responsible travel experience online to inspire others to protect the ocean too.

You can also help RMCG's activities by reporting sightings of animals in distress, ghost nets, or illegal activities. You can join our reef monitoring work if you are a certified Eco Diver. Donate to our work via the Reef Check coral adoption program, Adopt SeKarang.
