Tioman Marine Conservation Group
The Tioman Marine Conservation Group (TMCG) is a dedicated team of trained local islanders committed to conservation efforts across the seven villages on Tioman Island.
We founded Tioman Marine Conservation Group in 2015 under Reef Check Malaysia’s Cintai Tioman program to create opportunities for Tioman islanders to actively participate in the management and protection of our island home and the Marine Park it is in.
The concept is a community-based conservation group., which means a marine park island is cared for by islanders ourselves, and for conservation work to provide supplementary income for locals.
Today, we carry out regular programs to raise awareness on sustainability topics that affect our island, and collaborate with the four island schools to deliver environmental education programs.
We also lead the local sustainable tourism initiative in Tioman, working with resorts, dive shops, and snorkel guides to minimise environmental impact and promote responsible practices based on guidelines such as the ASEAN Green Hotel Standards and the Green Fins Code of Conduct.
Our marine conservation activities in Tioman include reef monitoring, ghost net removal, mooring buoy installation, Crown-of-Thorns (COT) starfish control, and reef rehabilitation.
Support sustainable tourism businesses in Tioman
Visitors can contribute to our efforts by supporting eco-friendly businesses, and reducing the use of water, electricity, and single-use plastics. See our Sustainable Tioman map below for guidance.
You can also help TMCG's activities by reporting sightings of animals in distress, ghost nets, or illegal activities. You can join our reef monitoring work if you are a certified Eco Diver. Donate to our work via the Reef Check coral adoption program, Adopt SeKarang.
